Right now, there are two councils in Oxford and they have different responsibilities: Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council.
This will soon change under the Government’s plans, but the question is where the borders of the new unitary council will be.
Cllr Susan Brown, Leader of the Labour Group on Oxford City Council, says: “When Oxford lost its independence as a city back in 1974 it was a mistake. This is a chance to fix that error – even if it’s taken 50 years to get there. The Government will choose between different options, one of which is our plan for a ‘Greater Oxford’ based on our city and the areas close to it.”
The Government is set to make a decision in July 2026 and elections to the ‘shadow’ councils that will manage the transition are due in May 2027, before the new unitary councils come into operation from April 2028.
