Cllr Glynis Phillips is putting a motion before the Oxfordshire County Council calling for fair pay for cleaners employed by Oxfordshire County Council. They are currently paid 51p an hour less than their counterparts in Oxford City Council.
The County Council’s Pay Policy Statement 2026/2027 states that ‘cleaning operatives roles’ are paid above the National Living Wage, but they are not paid the Oxford Living Wage.
The Oxford Living Wage is set at 95% of the London Living Wage, £14.06 an hour from April 2026. It was created and set at this level to reflect the high cost of living in Oxford and to give workers a decent wage to live on in our city.
Cllr Phillips says: “It is unacceptable to pay cleaners in County Hall a lower hourly rate than cleaners working in the Town Hall and over 190 other organisations in Oxford City. The motion calls for the Liberal Democrats to pay all directly employed staff the Oxford Living Wage and to ensure that all contractors and service providers do the same.”
Labour helped to introduce and expand the Oxford Living Wage. It’s now paid by over 190 local employers to well over 30,000 local people, including workers at Oxford City Council and ODS.
