From Friday 1st May, renters in Oxford and beyond now have more rights as Labour’s Renters’ Rights Act comes into force.
This means:
- No-fault ‘section 21’ evictions fully banned.
- No discrimination against renters with children or on benefits.
- No more rent bidding wars, extortionate upfront payments, or high rent increases.
- All renters now have the right to ask for a pet and all requests must be considered fairly.

This strengthens protections for renters and adds to what Oxford Labour have achieved while running Oxford City Council:
- Oxford is the first city in Britain to require all private landlords to hold a licence to improve housing standards. Check whether your landlord has a licence at www.oxford.gov.uk/private-renting.
- We are the only council in all of Oxfordshire to own and manage our own council homes.
- We are enforcing the highest share of social housing on bigger developments in the country.
