Parents with children travelling from Risinghurst to Wheatley Park School have been told that the school bus which leaves outside the Post Office in Risinghurst will be cancelled from September. Pupils will instead be expected to cross the dangerous A40 dual carriageway to catch the bus to school.
Cllr Glynis Phillips says: “I have invited the newly elected Cabinet member for Children and Young People Cllr Sean Gaul to come to Risinghurst to see the dangerous implications of this decision.
It is unacceptable for decisions to be made in County Hall without any knowledge of the dangers faced by Risinghurst children. There is no date for the installation of a safe pedestrian crossing at the bottom of Collinwood Road and until a safe crossing is in place the current bus service should stay in place.”
— UPDATE July 2025 — Following swift action from Labour Councillors Chewe Munkonge and Glynis Phillips, the Council has reversed its decision. Chewe, who has two daughters at Wheatley Park, immediately raised formal concerns, citing the risk to child safety and the lack of a safe crossing over the A40 dual carriageway. Alongside Glynis, Chewe pushed for a review and won.
