Oxford & District Labour Party is recruiting a new Local Organiser to work on the 2027 Unitary Council election, 2029 General Election, and beyond. Salary: £32,246.69 per year (pt 15 Labour Party scales)

Length of Contract: Permanent

As the Local Organiser, you will organise all aspects of our election campaigns including literature, campaigning, budget, expenses, nominations, polling day, and the count. You will be crucial in mobilising local members and supporting Labour candidates in campaigning to win as many seats as possible at every election.

This is an excellent opportunity for the candidate to gain experience in election campaigning with an effective and successful local party, with a strong national reputation.

Hours of work are 37.5 per week and are flexible with a lot of weekend and evening working. Paid holiday entitlement will be 28 days plus bank holidays.

You will report to and be managed by Oxford & District Labour Party VC Campaigns and Anneliese Dodds MP. You will be based at the Oxford & District Labour Party Office, Unit A, Bishops Mews, Transport Way, Oxford, OX4 6HD with the expectation of some travel around Oxford & District (Oxford East and Oxford West & Abingdon).

Key responsibilities include:
  • To work with the MP, councillors, candidates, CLP officers, Region, members, and supporters to build support and win elections, specifically upcoming local elections in 2027, any council by-elections which may occur, and the General Election as soon as it comes.
  • To organise all aspects of our election campaigns including literature, campaigning, budget, expenses, nominations, polling day and the count.
  • To design, print and oversee the distribution of newsletters and mailings.
  • To organise and lead campaign activities including canvassing, phone banks, and data entry. Central canvasses are usually run on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Other meetings such as City Labour Group and the Executive Committee usually occur on Thursday evenings.
  • To assist in the administration of an efficient campaign office.
  • To assist in the organisation of campaign events and visits.
  • To make targeting decisions in relation to campaigning using canvassing and other data on Labour Party tools such as Contact Creator and Insight.
  • To develop local fundraising to ensure we have adequate funding for elections. This includes organising events and dinners as well as working with the CLP Treasurer and Fundraising Officer to keep costs down.
  • To develop the local Labour Party’s electronic campaigning capabilities and social media campaigns.
  • To maintain Contact Creator and volunteer databases.
  • To recruit and manage volunteers to assist with data entry, fundraising, and campaigning with Oxford & District Labour Party.
  • To work with local campaign coordinators to identify campaign leaders and provide training and support to them on campaign techniques.
  • To work with Region as appropriate.
  • To attend and participate in training sessions relating to the role as directed, and to organise training for volunteers and candidates.
  • Any other tasks as specified by the local Campaign Committee and Executive Committee, in liaison with line management.

Person Specification:

Essential Skills and Experience:

  1. General knowledge of the Labour Party, its policies, principles, and organisation.
  2. Share the aims and values of the Labour Party and have experience of campaigning in elections.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of campaign techniques.
  4. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  5. Good computer literacy, including use of email communication systems and data input.
  6. Prepared to work flexibly and during unsocial hours particularly in the evenings and at weekends.
  7. Able to get on with a wide range of people, have strong negotiating skills and be able to motivate others to campaign for the Labour Party.
  8. Excellent organisational skills and be strong at record-keeping and attention to detail.
  9. Willing to take responsibility for planning and delivering objectives.
  10. Able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines.
  11. Experience of using Canva or similar systems such as Adobe InDesign to produce leaflets.

Desirable but not essential skills and experience:

  • A track record of helping to get Labour candidates elected.
  • Knowledge of Labour Party Campaign Technology including: Achieve, Contact Creator, Labour Connects, Organise, WordPress etc.
  • Experience of digital campaigning and social media, including paid advertising.
  • Experience of working with and managing volunteers.
