Labour City Councillors successfully pushed through their plans to make bulky waste collections FREE again at this week’s Full Council budget meeting.

Too many people have been finding it too expensive or difficult to get rid of old items, especially since the Lib Dem Oxfordshire County Council introduced a booking system at the Redbridge tip.

Our Labour Oxford City Council is working hard to turn that around. This change means Oxford residents won’t need to pay for items like old sofas and washing machines to be collected from outside their homes. Free bookings will go live on 2nd March at www.oxford.gov.uk/xfp/form/288.

Bulky waste collections will continue to be carried out by ODS, which was set up by Oxford City Council to keep our waste and street cleaning services in-house and ensure workers are paid at least the Oxford Living Wage (£14.06/hour in April 2026).

There will also be a new team of community wardens working with Thames Valley Police to crack down on anti-social behaviour like fly-tipping.

Cllr Ed Turner, who represents Rose Hill & Iffley and is the Cabinet Member for Finance, says: “It’s illegal, it’s antisocial, and the message to anyone tempted to fly-tip is this – you can have your bulky waste collected for free. We will start waiving the charge on the 2nd March, before the new financial year. Contact us, await the collection. If you fly tip instead, then we will come to get you.”

“People said they were sick of dumped rubbish and wanted something done about it. With free bulky waste collections and stronger enforcement against fly-tippers, we are taking action.”
